About PCOs

Who is eligible to Become a Precinct Committee Officer

State law (RCW 29A.80.041) provides that "any member of a major political party who is a registered voter in the precinct may upon payment of a fee of one dollar file his or her declaration of candidacy as prescribed under RCW 29A.24.031 with the county auditor for the office of precinct committee officer of his or her party in that precinct. When elected at the primary, the precinct committee officer shall serve so long as the committee officer remains an eligible voter in that precinct."

Election of a Precinct Committee Officer

From RCW 29A.80.051: "The statutory requirements for filing as a candidate at the primaries apply to candidates for precinct committee officer. The office must be voted upon at the primaries, and the names of all candidates must appear under the proper party and office designations on the ballot for the primary for each even-numbered year, and the one receiving the highest number of votes will be declared elected. However, to be declared elected, a candidate must receive at least ten percent of the number of votes cast for the candidate of the candidate's party receiving the greatest number of votes in the precinct. The term of office of precinct committee officer is two years, commencing the first day of December following the primary."

Terms of Office

The term of office for anyone elected to the office of Precinct Committee Officer is two years, and commences upon the official canvass of election returns by the County Auditors office.

PCO Recruitment Project - 100 in 100

On March 31st we have kicked off a new PCO Project for recruiting and retaining PCOs.

There are 10 people involved in the project and we are each being tasked with recruiting 10 new PCOs. So, our goal is to recruit 100 PCOs in 100 days. If anyone from this project contacts you about helping out, please give them a hand. We have set a high goal for ourselves, but fully intend to meet it. If you have ideas you think might help us, or better yet if you know of someone who would be a great PCO and lives in a district that is not currently staffed by a PCO please let us know.

We can also help you identify if a precinct is open or not if you know of someone who might be interested but don't know if their precinct position is filled or open. At are half way mark, approximately 45-50 days into the project, we are planning on having a welcoming party for the new recruits. There will be more on this later, but if nothing else, come and help us celebrate those who are new to our organization and make them feel welcomed.

PCO Free Speech Zone

The following list is available for Precinct Committee Officers (PCO), their Proxies and Thurston County Democrat (TCD) Central Committee Officers. This list is for TCD Precinct Committee Officers (PCOs), PCO Proxies, and Executive Committee Officers to use for discussion and organizing purposes.

You are encouraged to use this list to energize and encourage each other, strategize and brainstorm activities for your precincts, and organize to make it all happen.

Please do NOT post articles, issues and other topics not related to organizing in your Thurston County precincts.  Instead, post those items to the Thurston County Blog at http://thurstondemocrats.org/blog?q=blue.  There your topic will receive wider readership and you will have the opportunity to have a discussion with others who might be interested in the topic.

To subscribe, click on this link: http://mail.thurstondemocrats.org/mailman/listinfo/tcdpco_thurstondemocr... Subscription requests to this list will be validated against the current PCO and TCD officer roster before membership will be approved. If you are not a PCO, Proxy or Executive Committee Officer, please subscribe to our monthly newsletter to keep informed about what's happening with Thurston County Democrats and then apply to become a PCO or Proxy!

It's easy and fun. Join us, won't you?
